〜抜く

A compound-verb suffix meaning to carry an action through to the very end despite difficulty, or to do it thoroughly. It carries a nuance of effort and perseverance (走り抜く, 耐え抜く, 考え抜く), so it is odd with easy or trivial actions. Compare 〜切る, which stresses completing the whole amount (食べ切る), while 〜抜く stresses enduring hardship until the end.

• 最後まで走り抜いて、ゴールした。

  さいごまではしりぬいて、ゴールした。

  I ran all the way to the end and crossed the finish line.

• 考え抜いた末に、留学することに決めた。

  かんがえぬいたすえに、りゅうがくすることにきめた。

  After thinking it through thoroughly, I decided to study abroad.

• 苦しい時期を耐え抜いたからこそ、今の成功がある。

  くるしいじきをたえぬいたからこそ、いまのせいこうがある。

  It is precisely because they endured the hard times that they are successful now.
