〜を押して

Used with a limited set of nouns naming an obstacle — 病気・病・けが・高齢・反対・制止・危険 — to say the person went ahead in spite of it, pushing the obstacle aside. It carries admiration or a sense of strain, and is typical of written or formal speech such as news reports and obituaries. 反対を押し切って is the stronger variant used when opposition was actively overridden; unlike 〜にもかかわらず, 〜を押して implies the subject made a deliberate effort against resistance.

• 父は病気を押して式に出席した。

  ちちはびょうきをおしてしきにしゅっせきした。

  My father attended the ceremony despite his illness.

• 彼女は周囲の反対を押し切って留学を決めた。

  かのじょはしゅういのはんたいをおしきってりゅうがくをきめた。

  She decided to study abroad, overriding the objections of those around her.

• 監督の制止を押して、選手は再びマウンドに立った。

  かんとくのせいしをおして、せんしゅはふたたびマウンドにたった。

  Ignoring the manager's attempt to stop him, the pitcher took the mound again.
