〜は〜です

は (read "wa") marks the topic of the sentence; です is the polite copula. Used for introductions, definitions, occupations and nationalities.

• 私は学生です。

  わたしはがくせいです。

  I am a student.

• こちらは田中さんです。

  こちらはたなかさんです。

  This is Mr./Ms. Tanaka.
