〜てみる

Indicates doing something on a trial basis to find out what it is like or what will happen. みる is written in kana here, and conjugates freely (てみたい, てみた, てみてください). It does not mean 'attempt with effort' — for that use 〜ようとする. 〜てみたい is very common for things you'd like to experience.

• この服を着てみてもいいですか。

  このふくをきてみてもいいですか。

  May I try this outfit on?

• 新しいラーメン屋に行ってみました。おいしかったです。

  あたらしいラーメンやにいってみました。おいしかったです。

  I tried going to the new ramen shop. It was delicious.

• いつか富士山に登ってみたいです。

  いつかふじさんにのぼってみたいです。

  Someday I'd like to try climbing Mt. Fuji.
