〜にくい

The opposite of 〜やすい: the action is difficult to carry out or the event rarely happens. It also inflects as an い-adjective. Use it for difficulty caused by the nature of the thing itself; for difficulty because of a lack of skill or ability, 〜ことができない or 難しい is more natural. 〜づらい is a close synonym but emphasises physical or psychological discomfort for the speaker.

• この肉はかたくて食べにくいです。

  このにくはかたくてたべにくいです。

  This meat is tough and hard to eat.

• 小さい字は読みにくいので、大きくしてください。

  ちいさいじはよみにくいので、おおきくしてください。

  Small letters are hard to read, so please make them bigger.

• この店の名前は覚えにくいですね。

  このみせのなまえはおぼえにくいですね。

  This shop's name is hard to remember, isn't it?
