〜(ら)れる（尊敬）

The same form as the passive is used as a light honorific for the actions of superiors, customers or older people. It is less deferential than お〜になる but easy to use, so it is frequent in offices and news reports. Because the form is identical to the passive and potential, rely on context; never use it about your own actions.

• 社長はもう帰られました。

  しゃちょうはもうかえられました。

  The president has already gone home.

• 先生はこの本を書かれたそうです。

  せんせいはこのほんをかかれたそうです。

  I hear the professor wrote this book.

• 山田さんは来週の会議に出席されますか。

  やまださんはらいしゅうのかいぎにしゅっせきされますか。

  Will you be attending next week's meeting, Mr Yamada?
