お〜になる／ご〜になる

This is the standard honorific pattern for describing what a respected person does; it is more polite than 〜(ら)れる and common in service language and business. Native Japanese verbs take お (お読みになる, お帰りになる) and Sino-Japanese する-verbs take ご (ご利用になる, ご出席になる), though a few like 電話 take お. Verbs with special honorifics (いらっしゃる, 召し上がる, ご覧になる) use those instead, and one-mora ます-stems like 見る, 寝る do not fit this pattern; never apply it to yourself.

• 先生はもうお帰りになりました。

  せんせいはもうおかえりになりました。

  The teacher has already left.

• この新聞をお読みになりますか。

  このしんぶんをおよみになりますか。

  Would you like to read this newspaper?

• エレベーターをご利用になる場合は、こちらへどうぞ。

  えれべーたーをごりようになるばあいは、こちらへどうぞ。
