〜ないで（〜ないで＋動詞）

Connects two actions: the first is not done, and the second is done in that state or in its place. Typical English equivalents are "without ~ing" or "instead of ~ing". With い/な-adjectives and nouns you cannot use this form; and when the clause states a reason, 〜なくて is used instead (朝ご飯を食べなくて、お腹がすいた). 〜ずに is the stiffer, more written equivalent (する→せずに).

• 昨日は晩ご飯を食べないで寝ました。

  きのうはばんごはんをたべないでねました。

  Yesterday I went to bed without eating dinner.

• 辞書を使わないでこの手紙を読んでみてください。

  じしょをつかわないでこのてがみをよんでみてください。

• 日曜日はどこにも行かないで、家でゆっくりしていました。
