〜なくてはいけない／〜なくてはならない

Expresses obligation or necessity. 〜なくてはいけない tends to point to a particular situation or a rule that applies to the speaker here and now, while 〜なくてはならない sounds more general, rule-like and written. Both are near-synonyms of 〜なければいけない/ならない; in casual speech they contract to 〜なくちゃ(いけない) or simply 〜なくちゃ. Note the double negative: the ない part is part of the pattern, not a negative meaning.

• 薬を飲まなくてはいけません。

  くすりをのまなくてはいけません。

  I have to take my medicine.

• 図書館の本は二週間で返さなくてはならない。

  としょかんのほんはにしゅうかんでかえさなくてはならない。

  Library books must be returned within two weeks.

• あ、もう五時だ。そろそろ帰らなくちゃ。

  あ、もうごじだ。そろそろかえらなくちゃ。

  Oh, it's already five. I'd better head home.
