〜ないといけない

Literally "if you don't ~, it won't do", used for obligation. Of the "must" family it is the most conversational and is very common in everyday spoken Japanese, often about the speaker's own immediate plans. In casual speech it shortens to 〜ないと, which can stand alone at the end of a sentence (もう行かないと。). The polite form is 〜ないといけません.

• 明日までにレポートを出さないといけない。

  あしたまでにれぽーとをださないといけない。

  I have to hand in the report by tomorrow.

• 熱があるので、病院へ行かないといけません。

  ねつがあるので、びょういんへいかないといけません。

  I have a fever, so I have to go to the hospital.

• もうこんな時間だ。そろそろ準備しないと。

  もうこんなじかんだ。そろそろじゅんびしないと。

  Look at the time. I'd better start getting ready.
