〜まで／〜までに

まで marks the continuation of an action up to a point in time: the action keeps going the whole way until then. までに marks a deadline: the action happens once, at some point before that time. Choose まで with continuous verbs (待つ、寝る、働く) and までに with one-time verbs (出す、帰る、終わらせる). A common mistake is 「5時まで宿題を出します」, which should be 「5時までに」.

• 朝まで雨が降っていました。

  あさまであめがふっていました。

  It was raining until morning.

• レポートは金曜日までに出してください。

  レポートはきんようびまでにだしてください。

  Please hand in the report by Friday.

• 母が帰ってくるまでに、部屋をきれいにしておこう。

  ははがかえってくるまでに、へやをきれいにしておこう。

  Let me clean the room before my mother gets back.
