〜という（名前・呼び方）

Used to introduce a name the listener probably does not know yet: 「田中という人」 'a person called Tanaka'. When asking or explaining what something is called, 「〜は何といいますか」 and 「〜という意味です」 are common set uses. If both speakers already know the person or thing, drop という and just say 田中さん.

• 山田という人から電話がありました。

  やまだというひとからでんわがありました。

  There was a call from someone named Yamada.

• 「すし三郎」という店へ行ったことがありますか。

  「すしさぶろう」というみせへいったことがありますか。

  Have you ever been to a restaurant called Sushi Saburo?

• この漢字は日本語で何といいますか。

  このかんじはにほんごでなんといいますか。
