〜そうもない／〜そうにない

This is the negative of the 様態 (appearance) 〜そうだ: judging from the present situation, the speaker sees no likelihood that something will happen. 〜そうもない and 〜そうにない mean the same thing; そうにもない is also heard, and the polite form is 〜そうもありません. Note that the plain negative 〜そうじゃない is rarely used for this meaning, so learners should master these forms instead. It is used with verbs, not with adjectives, and often carries a tone of resignation (この雨ではやみそうもない).

• 雨はまだやみそうもない。

  あめはまだやみそうもない。

  It doesn't look like the rain will stop yet.

• 仕事が多くて、今日は早く帰れそうにありません。

  しごとがおおくて、きょうははやくかえれそうにありません。

  I have a lot of work, so it doesn't look like I can go home early today.

• この本は難しくて、一週間では読み終わりそうにない。

  このほんはむずかしくて、いっしゅうかんではよみおわりそうにない。

  This book is hard; it doesn't look like I'll finish it in a week.
