〜ふりをする

Used when someone deliberately behaves as if something were true when it is not. The subject is usually a person acting on purpose, so it carries a slightly negative or playful nuance. Note the difference from 〜ようだ/〜みたいだ, which describe the speaker's impression rather than intentional acting; also compare 〜そうなふりをする for appearances.

• 弟は寝たふりをしている。

  おとうとは ねた ふりを している。

  My little brother is pretending to be asleep.

• 知らないふりをしないで、本当のことを教えてください。

  しらない ふりを しないで、ほんとうの ことを おしえて ください。

  Don't pretend you don't know — please tell me the truth.

• 彼は外国人のふりをして、日本語がわからないと言った。

  かれは がいこくじんの ふりを して、にほんごが わからないと いった。

  He pretended to be a foreigner and said he didn't understand Japanese.
