〜つもりで／〜つもりだった

〜つもりで marks the mindset or assumption a person acts on: 「学生のつもりで勉強する」 means acting as though one were a student. 〜たつもりだった/〜つもりだった often reveals a gap with reality — the speaker believed they had done something or intended something, but it turned out otherwise. Unlike plain 〜つもりだ (a future plan), these uses focus on the mental stance or on the mistaken belief.

• 旅行に行ったつもりで、そのお金を貯金した。

  りょこうに いった つもりで、その おかねを ちょきんした。

  Pretending I had gone on a trip, I saved that money instead.

• 冗談のつもりで言ったのに、彼女は怒ってしまった。

  じょうだんの つもりで いったのに、かのじょは おこって しまった。

  I said it as a joke, but she got angry.

• メールを送ったつもりだったが、下書きのまま残っていた。

  メールを おくった つもりだったが、したがきの まま のこって いた。

  I thought I had sent the email, but it was still sitting in drafts.
