〜ことに（感情）

Placed at the head of a sentence to state the speaker's emotion about the fact that follows. Only emotion words are used: 驚いたことに、うれしいことに、残念なことに、困ったことに、幸いなことに. It is somewhat formal and common in writing or speeches; the main clause must state a fact, not a request or command.

• うれしいことに、試験に合格しました。

  うれしい ことに、しけんに ごうかく しました。

  To my delight, I passed the exam.

• 驚いたことに、彼は十か国語が話せる。

  おどろいた ことに、かれは じゅっかこくごが はなせる。

  To my surprise, he can speak ten languages.

• 残念なことに、今年の夏祭りは中止になった。

  ざんねんな ことに、ことしの なつまつりは ちゅうしに なった。

  Unfortunately, this year's summer festival was cancelled.
