〜さえ

Marks an extreme or surprising example to imply that everything else is naturally the same: 'if even X, then of course the rest.' It replaces は/が/を, and can follow other particles (にさえ, からさえ). Compared with も, さえ is more emphatic and more often used in negative or unexpected statements; it is common in both writing and speech.

• 忙しくて、食事をする時間さえない。

  いそがしくて、しょくじをするじかんさえない。

  I'm so busy I don't even have time to eat.

• этот漢字は小学生さえ読める。

  このかんじはしょうがくせいさえよめる。

  Even an elementary school student can read this kanji.

• 熱が高くて、立つことさえできなかった。

  ねつがたかくて、たつことさえできなかった。

  My fever was so high that I couldn't even stand up.
