〜ばよかった／〜ばいいのに

〜ばよかった looks back on the past with regret about what the speaker did or failed to do (often with ～のに added for emphasis). 〜ばいいのに refers to the present or future and expresses a wish that reality were different, usually about someone else, with a hint of dissatisfaction. Both are conversational; use 〜たらいいですね for a plain friendly hope instead.

• もっと早く家を出ればよかった。

  もっとはやくいえをでればよかった。

  I should have left home earlier.

• あんなことを言わなければよかったと後悔している。

  あんなことをいわなければよかったとこうかいしている。

  I regret it; I wish I hadn't said something like that.

• 田中さんも一緒に来ればいいのに。

  たなかさんもいっしょにくればいいのに。

  I wish Tanaka would come along too.
