〜といい

Expresses a hope about something the speaker cannot control, typically ending in 〜といいですね (to others) or 〜といいなあ (to oneself). The verb stays in the dictionary form; for a wish about one's own action, 〜たらいい or 〜ばいい is more natural. When the hope concerns something unlikely or contrary to fact, 〜といいのに is used instead.

• 明日、晴れるといいですね。

  あした、はれるといいですね。

  I hope it's sunny tomorrow.

• 新しい仕事が楽しいといいなあ。

  あたらしいしごとがたのしいといいなあ。

  I hope the new job is fun.

• 手術がうまくいくといいのですが。

  しゅじゅつがうまくいくといいのですが。

  I do hope the operation goes well.
