〜わけだ

Used when the speaker reaches a natural, logical conclusion from a fact just learned or observed — 'ah, so that's why'. It can also state a self-evident consequence of circumstances. Unlike 〜はずだ (expectation based on reasoning) or 〜わけではない (partial denial), 〜わけだ presents the conclusion as something that simply must follow. Common in both conversation and writing; どうりで often appears with it.

• 窓が開いている。どうりで寒いわけだ。

  まどがあいている。どうりでさむいわけだ。

  The window is open. No wonder it's cold.

• 彼は十年アメリカにいたのか。英語が上手なわけだ。

  かれはじゅうねんアメリカにいたのか。えいごがじょうずなわけだ。

  He was in America for ten years? That's why his English is so good.

• 一日三時間練習すれば、一週間で二十一時間練習することになるわけだ。

  いちにちさんじかんれんしゅうすれば、いっしゅうかんでにじゅういちじかんれんしゅうすることになるわけだ。

  If you practice three hours a day, it follows that you practice twenty-one hours a week.
