〜わりに（は）

States that the result does not match what you would proportionally expect from the given condition — often 'surprisingly good/cheap/little for the...'. The standard can be a general degree (値段, 年, 量), which is where it differs from 〜にしては, whose standard must be a concrete fact. は is often added for contrast and is very common in speech.

• この店は値段のわりにおいしい。

  このみせはねだんのわりにおいしい。

  This place tastes good for the price.

• 母は年のわりには若く見える。

  はははとしのわりにはわかくみえる。

  My mother looks young for her age.

• たくさん勉強したわりには、点数がよくなかった。

  たくさんべんきょうしたわりには、てんすうがよくなかった。

  Considering how much I studied, my score wasn't good.
