〜にしては

Takes a concrete standard (a job, an age, a season, a fact) and says the result is surprisingly different from what that standard leads you to expect. The standard must be specific, so 〜にしては cannot follow vague amounts like 年の割には uses. Unlike 〜わりに, which compares proportion, にしては always signals a clear mismatch with expectation.

• 4月にしては寒いですね。

  しがつにしてはさむいですね。

  It's cold for April, isn't it?

• 彼は日本に住んだことがないにしては、日本語が上手だ。

  かれはにほんにすんだことがないにしては、にほんごがじょうずだ。

  For someone who has never lived in Japan, his Japanese is good.

• 初めて作ったにしては、よくできている。

  はじめてつくったにしては、よくできている。

  For a first attempt, it's very well made.
