〜代わりに

Two related uses: substitution (B is done in place of A) and compensation (you get B in exchange for giving A). With nouns, Nの代わりに usually means simple substitution. The compensation use often appears with 〜が／けど-like balance: a plus and a minus offsetting each other.

• 部長の代わりに私が会議に出ます。

  ぶちょうのかわりにわたしがかいぎにでます。

  I will attend the meeting in place of the manager.

• 日曜日に働く代わりに、月曜日は休みます。

  にちようびにはたらくかわりに、げつようびはやすみます。

  In exchange for working on Sunday, I'll take Monday off.

• この車は高い代わりに、故障が少ない。

  このくるまはたかいかわりに、こしょうがすくない。

  This car is expensive, but in return it rarely breaks down.
