〜というより

Rejects one way of describing something and offers a more accurate one; the second half is the speaker's preferred wording, often with むしろ. It compares expressions or judgments, not actual choices, so it is not used for 'I chose B rather than A' (that is 〜より…ほうが). Common in conversation when refining someone's characterization.

• 彼は先生というより友達みたいだ。

  かれはせんせいというよりともだちみたいだ。

  He's more like a friend than a teacher.

• この部屋は狭いというより、物が多すぎるんだ。

  このへやはせまいというより、ものがおおすぎるんだ。

  It's not so much that this room is small, it's that there's too much stuff.

• あれは趣味というより、むしろ仕事に近い。

  あれはしゅみというより、むしろしごとにちかい。

  That's closer to work than to a hobby.
