〜ということだ（伝聞）

Reports information received from another source without adding the speaker's own judgment; the source is often named with 〜によると or 〜の話では. It is more formal than 〜そうだ and common in news, business messages and relayed announcements; とのことだ is the polite written variant used in emails. Note the other use of ということだ meaning 'that is to say / it means', which is a conclusion, not hearsay.

• 天気予報によると、明日は雪が降るということだ。

  てんきよほうによると、あしたはゆきがふるということだ。

  According to the forecast, it will snow tomorrow.

• 田中さんは今日、来られないということです。

  たなかさんはきょう、こられないということです。

  I hear that Mr. Tanaka can't come today.

• 社長の話では、新しい店は来月オープンするとのことだ。

  しゃちょうのはなしでは、あたらしいみせはらいげつオープンするとのことだ。

  According to the president, the new store will open next month.
