〜なんて／〜なんか

Both mark the preceding item with an emotional attitude: scorn (こんな仕事なんか), self-deprecation (私なんか), or surprise/disbelief (彼が来るなんて). なんか attaches mainly to nouns and is very colloquial; なんて can also follow a plain-form clause, especially before 思わなかった・信じられない. Avoid it when speaking politely about the listener, since it can sound belittling.

• 私なんか、まだまだですよ。

  わたしなんか、まだまだですよ。

  Someone like me still has a long way to go.

• 彼女が引っ越すなんて、全然知らなかった。

  かのじょがひっこすなんて、ぜんぜんしらなかった。

  I had no idea she was moving!

• 宿題なんかやりたくない。

  しゅくだいなんかやりたくない。

  I don't want to do homework or anything like that.
