〜上で

〜上で links two actions where the first is a deliberate preparatory step — checking, discussing, considering — and the second is a decision or action based on its result. It is formal, typical of business and written Japanese: 家族と相談した上でお返事します. Only volitional actions fit; you cannot say 雨が降った上で. Compare 〜てから, which merely gives time order without the sense of 'on the basis of the result'.

• よく考えた上で、返事をします。

  よくかんがえたうえで、へんじをします。

  I'll give you my answer after thinking it over carefully.

• 契約内容を確認した上で、サインしてください。

  けいやくないようをかくにんしたうえで、サインしてください。

  Please sign after checking the contents of the contract.

• 申し込みの上で、面接の日時をお知らせします。

  もうしこみのうえで、めんせつのにちじをおしらせします。

  After you apply, we will inform you of the interview date and time.
