〜(よ)うではないか

A formal, rhetorical way of urging a group to do something together, common in speeches, editorials and written appeals. It sounds much stronger and more public than plain 〜ましょう, so it is rare in casual chat between friends. 〜ではありませんか is the polite form; 〜じゃないか is a rougher spoken variant used mainly by male speakers.

• みんなで力を合わせようではないか。

  みんなでちからをあわせようではないか。

  Let us join our strength together.

• もう一度話し合おうではありませんか。

  もういちどはなしあおうではありませんか。

  Shall we not discuss it once more?

• この町の未来を、私たち自身の手で作ろうではありませんか。

  このまちのみらいを、わたしたちじしんのてでつくろうではありませんか。

  Let us build the future of this town with our own hands.
