〜ながら（逆接）

This 〜ながら is not the 'while doing' one: it marks a contrast, 'although X, nevertheless Y'. It attaches to the ます-stem, to い-adjectives as they are, and directly to nouns and な-adjective stems (子供ながら, 残念ながら). Adding も (〜ながらも) strengthens the contrast. It is more literary and set-phrase-like than のに, and often appears with 知っていながら, 悪いと思いながら, 狭いながらも.

• 狭いながらも、自分の部屋があって幸せだ。

  せまいながらも、じぶんのへやがあってしあわせだ。

  Small though it is, I'm happy to have a room of my own.

• 彼は答えを知っていながら、教えてくれなかった。

  かれはこたえをしっていながら、おしえてくれなかった。

  Even though he knew the answer, he wouldn't tell me.

• 残念ながら、今回の企画は中止になりました。

  ざんねんながら、こんかいのきかくはちゅうしになりました。
