〜最中に

最中に marks the peak of an ongoing activity, and the second clause reports something that interrupts it — usually inconvenient or unexpected. It needs an action that lasts a while (a meeting, an exam, a meal, a phone call), so it does not fit momentary states. Use 〜の最中に after nouns like 会議, 試験, 食事. Compared with 〜ている間に, which allows any time within a period, 最中に stresses 'at the very height of it', often with annoyance.

• 食事の最中に電話が鳴った。

  しょくじのさいちゅうにでんわがなった。

  The phone rang right in the middle of dinner.

• 試験の最中に地震が起きて、みんな驚いた。

  しけんのさいちゅうにじしんがおきて、みんなおどろいた。

  An earthquake struck in the middle of the exam and everyone was shocked.

• 会議をしている最中に、彼は席を立ってしまった。

  かいぎをしているさいちゅうに、かれはせきをたってしまった。

  He got up and left right in the middle of the meeting.
