〜にあたって／〜に際して

Used before an important or special undertaking (a departure, an opening ceremony, signing a contract) to mark the moment just before or at the start of it. It is formal, typical of speeches, announcements and written notices, and is not used for everyday routine actions. 〜に際して is slightly stiffer and more written than 〜にあたって; both may take the forms 〜にあたり／〜に際し in very formal writing.

• 新学期を迎えるにあたって、目標を立てました。

  しんがっきをむかえるにあたって、もくひょうをたてました。

  On the occasion of the new term, I set myself a goal.

• 契約に際して、必要な書類をご用意ください。

  けいやくにさいして、ひつようなしょるいをごようい ください。

  When signing the contract, please prepare the necessary documents.

• 開会にあたり、一言ごあいさつ申し上げます。

  かいかいにあたり、ひとことごあいさつもうしあげます。
