〜をきっかけに／〜を契機に

Marks an event that triggered a lasting change — a new habit, a new relationship, a change of direction. The result is usually something unplanned that grew out of the event, and both good and bad triggers are possible. 〜を契機に is more formal and written (news, essays); 〜をきっかけに is ordinary conversational and neutral.

• 留学をきっかけに、日本の文化に興味を持つようになった。

  りゅうがくをきっかけに、にほんのぶんかにきょうみをもつようになった。

  Studying abroad got me interested in Japanese culture.

• 病気をしたのをきっかけに、たばこをやめました。

  びょうきをしたのをきっかけに、たばこをやめました。

  Falling ill was what made me quit smoking.

• この事故を契機に、安全対策が見直された。

  このじこをけいきに、あんぜんたいさくがみなおされた。

  This accident prompted a review of the safety measures.
