〜ない限り

Sets a condition: the situation in the main clause holds unless that condition changes. The main clause usually expresses a negative result, impossibility or a firm judgement (〜ない、〜できない、〜だろう). It is stronger and more absolute than 〜なければ, implying 'that one condition is the only way out'.

• 毎日練習しない限り、上手にはなれない。

  まいにちれんしゅうしないかぎり、じょうずにはなれない。

  Unless you practise every day, you won't get good.

• 雨が降らない限り、試合は予定通り行われます。

  あめがふらないかぎり、しあいはよていどおりおこなわれます。

  Unless it rains, the match will be held as scheduled.

• 本人が認めない限り、この問題は解決しないだろう。

  ほんにんがみとめないかぎり、このもんだいはかいけつしないだろう。

  Unless he himself admits it, this problem probably won't be settled.
