〜上は

A formal, rather old-fashioned written variant of 〜からには, used when a decision has already been made and the speaker announces resolve or an unavoidable duty. It attaches to verbs only, most often verbs of deciding, accepting or becoming known (決めた・引き受けた・こうなった). Rare in everyday conversation; in speech use からには or 以上は.

• やると決めた上は、全力でやるだけだ。

  やるときめたうえは、ぜんりょくでやるだけだ。

  Now that I've decided to do it, all that's left is to give it my all.

• こうなった上は、正直に話すしかない。

  こうなったうえは、しょうじきにはなすしかない。

  Now that things have come to this, there is nothing to do but tell the truth.

• 社長を引き受けた上は、会社を立て直す責任がある。

  しゃちょうをひきうけたうえは、かいしゃをたてなおすせきにんがある。

  Having accepted the post of president, I bear the responsibility of rebuilding the company.
