〜つつ

Has two uses: (1) two actions by the same subject at the same time, like ながら; (2) a concessive 'although', where the second clause goes against the first (悪いと知りつつ…). It is a written, literary form — in conversation ながら or のに is far more natural. When used for simultaneity the two verbs must share one subject.

• 音楽を聞きつつ、レポートを書いた。

  おんがくをききつつ、レポートをかいた。

  I wrote my report while listening to music.

• 体に悪いと知りつつ、たばこがやめられない。

  からだにわるいとしりつつ、たばこがやめられない。

  Although I know it's bad for my health, I can't quit smoking.

• 窓の外を眺めつつ、学生時代のことを思い出していた。

  まどのそとをながめつつ、がくせいじだいのことをおもいだしていた。

  Gazing out the window, I was recalling my student days.
