〜つつある

Expresses that a change is steadily progressing toward some end state. It is a written, somewhat formal expression common in news, reports and academic writing, and is used with verbs of change (増える, 進む, 回復する, 失われる) rather than with everyday ongoing actions. Compare 〜ている: 食べている means 'is eating', but you would not say 食べつつある for a simple action — 〜つつある stresses gradual transition.

• 景気は少しずつ回復しつつある。

  けいきはすこしずつかいふくしつつある。

  The economy is gradually recovering.

• 地球の温暖化は確実に進みつつある。

  ちきゅうのおんだんかはかくじつにすすみつつある。

  Global warming is steadily advancing.

• この地方の古い習慣は失われつつある。

  このちほうのふるいしゅうかんはうしなわれつつある。

  The old customs of this region are being lost.
