〜かねる

An affirmative form with a negative meaning: the speaker is unable to do something because of circumstances, feelings, or company policy. It is mainly used in formal, polite speech and business writing (お答えしかねます, ご希望に添いかねます) as a soft, indirect way of refusing. Note the contrast with 〜かねない, which means 'might well happen (something bad)' — opposite in meaning despite the similar look.

• 申し訳ありませんが、私には分かりかねます。

  もうしわけありませんが、わたしにはわかりかねます。

  I'm sorry, but I'm afraid I can't say.

• その件については、お答えいたしかねます。

  そのけんについては、おこたえいたしかねます。

  I am unable to comment on that matter.

• ご希望の日程には応じかねますので、ご了承ください。

  ごきぼうのにっていにはおうじかねますので、ごりょうしょうください。

  We regret that we cannot accommodate the dates you requested.
