〜てまで／〜までして

Used when someone goes to an extreme, often morally questionable or costly, length to reach a goal. The speaker usually adds a negative judgment or a rhetorical question such as 〜たくない or 〜価値があるのか. 〜てまで attaches to verbs, while 〜までして attaches to nouns (borrowing money, lying, etc.); both are common in writing and careful speech.

• 借金をしてまで旅行に行きたくない。

  しゃっきんをしてまでりょこうにいきたくない。

  I don't want to travel so badly that I'd go into debt for it.

• 徹夜までして準備したのに、発表は中止になった。

  てつやまでしてじゅんびしたのに、はっぴょうはちゅうしになった。

  I even stayed up all night preparing, but the presentation was canceled.

• 自然を壊してまで開発を進める必要があるのだろうか。

  しぜんをこわしてまでかいはつをすすめるひつようがあるのだろうか。
