〜わけではあるまいし／〜じゃあるまいし

The speaker denies an obvious premise and uses that denial as a reason to criticize, scold or advise. It carries an emotional, colloquial tone, so it appears in spoken Japanese and rarely in formal writing. The second clause usually contains criticism or a command (〜んだから、〜なさい、〜べきだ).

• 子供じゃあるまいし、そんなことで泣くな。

  こどもじゃあるまいし、そんなことでなくな。

  You're not a child, so don't cry over something like that.

• 神様じゃあるまいし、未来のことなんて分かるわけがない。

  かみさまじゃあるまいし、みらいのことなんてわかるわけがない。

  I'm not a god; there's no way I can know the future.

• 命に関わるわけではあるまいし、そんなに心配しなくてもいいよ。

  いのちにかかわるわけではあるまいし、そんなにしんぱいしなくてもいいよ。

  It's not as if your life is at stake, so there's no need to worry so much.
