〜における

A formal, written equivalent of で marking place, time, field or situation, used to modify a following noun; the predicate form is 〜において. It appears in reports, academic writing, contracts and speeches, and sounds stiff in everyday conversation. It cannot mark a tool or means, and with a person it means 'in the case of / for', not the instrument.

• 日本における少子化は深刻な問題だ。

  にほんにおけるしょうしかはしんこくなもんだいだ。

  The declining birthrate in Japan is a serious problem.

• 会議における発言はすべて記録されます。

  かいぎにおけるはつげんはすべてきろくされます。

  All remarks made at the meeting will be recorded.

• 20世紀における科学技術の発展はめざましかった。

  にじゅっせいきにおけるかがくぎじゅつのはってんはめざましかった。

  The development of science and technology in the 20th century was remarkable.
