〜ところを見ると

Introduces something the speaker has observed and then draws an inference from it; the main clause almost always ends in a guess such as 〜らしい、〜ようだ、〜にちがいない、〜のだろう. The evidence must be something actually seen or noticed at the moment, so it is common in spoken, everyday reasoning. Compare 〜ことから, which is more objective and written and can lead to a definite statement.

• 笑っているところを見ると、試験はうまくいったらしい。

  わらっているところをみると、しけんはうまくいったらしい。

  Judging from the fact that he's smiling, the exam must have gone well.

• 電気が消えているところを見ると、もう寝たのだろう。

  でんきがきえているところをみると、もうねたのだろう。

  Since the lights are off, she must have gone to bed already.

• 何も言わないところを見ると、彼女はこの計画に反対なのかもしれない。

  なにもいわないところをみると、かのじょはこのけいかくにはんたいなのかもしれない。

  Judging from her saying nothing, she may be against this plan.
