〜がたい

Expresses that something is psychologically or practically so difficult that it is nearly impossible, usually about the speaker's judgement or feeling rather than physical skill. It is a written, somewhat formal expression and attaches only to a limited set of verbs: 信じる, 理解する, 想像する, 忘れる, 言う, 認める, 近づく. Unlike 〜にくい, which describes physical difficulty (この字は読みにくい), 〜がたい is not used for everyday inconvenience.

• 彼が犯人だとは信じがたい。

  かれがはんにんだとはしんじがたい。

  It's hard to believe that he is the culprit.

• あの日の光景は今も忘れがたい。

  あのひのこうけいはいまもわすれがたい。

  The scene of that day is still hard to forget.

• この結果は、成功したとは言いがたいものだった。

  このけっかは、せいこうしたとはいいがたいものだった。

  This result could hardly be called a success.
