〜ゆえに／〜がゆえに

A stiff, literary way of stating a cause, used in essays, academic writing, legal texts and formal speeches instead of から or ので. が in 〜がゆえに is a classical possessive particle and is optional after nouns (若さ(が)ゆえに). The noun-modifying form is 〜ゆえの (若さゆえの過ち), and the expression is rarely heard in casual conversation.

• 若さゆえに犯した過ちだ。

  わかさゆえにおかしたあやまちだ。

  It was a mistake made out of youth.

• 貧しさのゆえに進学を諦めた人も多い。

  まずしさのゆえにしんがくをあきらめたひともおおい。

  Many people gave up on higher education because of poverty.

• 女性であるがゆえに不当な扱いを受けることがある。

  じょせいであるがゆえにふとうなあつかいをうけることがある。

  There are times when one is treated unfairly simply for being a woman.
