〜べく

A formal, written way of stating purpose, equivalent to 〜ために or 〜ようと思って. It appears in news reports, business documents and formal narration, and the subject usually acts deliberately toward a goal. It cannot be followed by a request, order or invitation, and the negative form is べからず, not べくない.

• 試験に合格すべく、毎日勉強している。

  しけんにごうかくすべく、まいにちべんきょうしている。

  I study every day in order to pass the exam.

• 被害の拡大を防ぐべく、直ちに対策が取られた。

  ひがいのかくだいをふせぐべく、ただちにたいさくがとられた。

  Measures were taken at once in order to prevent the damage from spreading.

• 彼は約束を果たすべく、再びこの町に戻ってきた。

  かれはやくそくをはたすべく、ふたたびこのまちにもどってきた。

  He came back to this town in order to keep his promise.
