〜べからず／〜べからざる

べからず ends a sentence as a blunt prohibition and is typical of signs, notices and proverbs (立入るべからず, 初心忘るべからず); it sounds old-fashioned and authoritative. べからざる modifies a noun, mostly in set collocations such as 許すべからざる行為 and 欠くべからざる存在. Both come from classical Japanese, so in everyday speech 〜てはいけない is used instead.

• ここにゴミを捨てるべからず。

  ここにごみをすてるべからず。

  Do not dump rubbish here.

• 「初心忘るべからず」という言葉がある。

  「しょしんわするべからず」ということばがある。

  There is a saying: "Never forget your original intention."

• それは人として許すべからざる行為だ。

  それはひととしてゆるすべからざるこういだ。

  That is an act unforgivable for a human being.
