〜だに

A literary, classical-flavoured particle. With verbs like 想像する・考える・聞く it means 'even merely doing X (is frightening/moving)'; with nouns in 〜だに〜ない (微動だにしない, 予想だにしなかった) it means 'not even a bit'. The combinations are largely fixed, so learners should reuse the set phrases rather than create new ones; it never appears in casual conversation.

• そんな事故は想像するだに恐ろしい。

  そんなじこはそうぞうするだにおそろしい。

  Such an accident is terrifying just to imagine.

• 彼は名前を呼ばれても微動だにしなかった。

  かれはなまえをよばれてもびどうだにしなかった。

  Even when his name was called, he didn't budge an inch.

• こんな結果になろうとは予想だにしなかった。

  こんなけっかになろうとはよそうだにしなかった。

  I never for a moment expected things to turn out like this.
