〜ですら／〜すら

Picks out an extreme example to imply 'if even this is so, all the more so with others'. It is the formal, written equivalent of 〜さえ and very often pairs with a negative predicate (〜すら〜ない). ですら is used when the noun is the subject and adds extra emphasis; unlike 〜さえ, 〜すら is not used for the conditional 'if only' meaning (さえ〜ば).

• それは子供ですら知っている常識だ。

  それはこどもですらしっているじょうしきだ。

  That's common knowledge even a child knows.

• 忙しくて、食事をする時間すらない。

  いそがしくて、しょくじをするじかんすらない。

  I'm so busy I don't even have time to eat.

• あまりの疲れで、自分の名前すら思い出せなかった。

  あまりのつかれで、じぶんのなまえすらおもいだせなかった。

  I was so exhausted that I couldn't even recall my own name.
