〜とて

A literary equivalent of 〜でも／〜としても. With a noun it means 'even (this person/thing) is no exception'; with a clause it means 'even if you do it, the result will not change', so the second half is usually negative or resigned. It sounds old-fashioned and bookish, common in novels, essays and formal writing but rare in conversation. A separate use, 〜とて＝〜という理由で (because), survives mainly in set literary phrases.

• 私とて、この結果には満足していない。

  わたしとて、このけっかにはまんぞくしていない。

  Even I am not satisfied with this result.

• 今から急いだとて、間に合うまい。

  いまからいそいだとて、まにあうまい。

  Even if we hurry now, we probably won't make it.

• 子供とて許されることではない。

  こどもとてゆるされることではない。

  Even a child cannot be forgiven for such a thing.
