〜ともあろう

Used to express surprise, disappointment or reproach: a person or body of such high standing should never have done such a thing. The following clause is therefore almost always negative or critical, often ending in 〜とは, 〜なんて, or 〜べきではない. It is formal and typical of news commentary, speeches and written complaints; it cannot be used for an ordinary person with no special status.

• 警察官ともあろう者が、うそをつくとは。

  けいさつかんともあろうものが、うそをつくとは。

  To think that a police officer, of all people, would lie.

• 大企業ともあろうものが、こんなミスをするとは情けない。

  だいきぎょうともあろうものが、こんなミスをするとはなさけない。

  It's pathetic that a major corporation would make a mistake like this.

• 一国の首相ともあろう人が、事実を知らなかったはずがない。

  いっこくのしゅしょうともあろうひとが、じじつをしらなかったはずがない。

  A person who is the prime minister of a country cannot possibly have been unaware of the facts.
