〜にかたくない

A written expression meaning 'anyone can easily imagine/understand it', used after a limited set of verbs of mental perception, above all 想像する and 察する. It usually follows a description of someone's hardship or a predictable outcome, and conveys sympathy or a confident inference. Strictly bookish — newspapers, essays, formal speech; saying it in casual conversation sounds odd, where 簡単に想像できる is natural instead.

• 遺族の悲しみは想像にかたくない。

  いぞくのかなしみはそうぞうにかたくない。

  It is not hard to imagine the grief of the bereaved family.

• 彼が反対した理由は察するにかたくない。

  かれがはんたいしたりゆうはさっするにかたくない。

  It is easy enough to guess why he objected.

• этот計画が失敗に終わることは、予想するにかたくなかった。

  このけいかくがしっぱいにおわることは、よそうするにかたくなかった。

  It was not hard to predict that this plan would end in failure.
